For various reasons, many gardens include plants grown in containers. Pots and tubs are portable, so frost sensitive species which grow in full exposure from spring to autumn may be moved to sheltered locations prior to cold winter weather.

Irrigation of potted plants either in the garden or home can be somewhat tricky. Roots are confined to relatively minimal volumes of soil and can not be as selective of environment as roots of plants grown directly in the soil.

Specimens may be left in their nursery cans if the cans are placed into larger pots or containers, or nestled into shallow shrubbery or deep ground-cover. Containers and pots in which plants are grown in around the home should not exhibit the same uncomfortable characteristics of the nursery cans.
